ALAY KAPWA

ALAY KAPWA Program: A Lenten-Evangelization Action Program of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)

HOW ALAY KAPWA STARTED

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) approved in principle in January, 1973 the holding of an annual Lenten campaign for development and peace beginning in 1974. As early as 1972, the CBCP has already brought up the idea to have its own National Lenten Campaign. Still, the 1974 implementation of the campaign did not push through due to lack of funds, lack of personnel and the lack of time and was eventually reset for 1975. The network of NASSA-JP, the Social Communications Center (SCC), and the Christian Community Program (CCP) made up the original core group for the Lenten Action1975.
The campaign was envisioned to be conducted in the name of the bishops by the National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace (NASSA-JP) – the secretariat of the Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice and Peace – working with the social action centers on the diocesan levels.

ALAY KAPWA THROUGH THE YEARS

Annual Themes Explained from 1975
Each year since its inception in 1975, Alay Kapwa focuses on a different theme for each Lenten Campaign. Thus, this section tries to give a short explanation and convey the context of each Lenten theme. All write-ups were based on chosen Alay Kapwa primers, brochures, reflection guides and even talks of Bishops published that best deliver the message of the annual campaign from 1975 to the present.
